Directions to the Alice Austen House
The Alice Austen House may be a little off the beaten path, but there are plenty of options for getting
here - by driving, bus, train or ferry. We break down all the details for you, below the map.
If you're coming to the after-party, it will be held at 61 Local, at 61 Bergen St. in Brooklyn, starting at 8
pm. If you are staying in Brooklyn or Manhattan, we encourage you to get to the bar by public transit,
since parking is very limited. The bar is across the street from the Bergen stop on the F and G trains, and
a half mile walk to the A,C,2,3,4,5,N,R trains.
There and Back Again
Car Service From Brooklyn
Hiring a car service or hailing a green cab is the easiest option from Brooklyn if you aren't driving. To
save on the cost, we encourage you to share a car with other guests (email the bride/groom if you want
help getting connected). Here's a couple options:
Family Car Service - 718-596-0664
Myrtle Car Service - 718-230-8100
Uber - https://www.uber.com/
Lyft - https://www.lyft.com/
Tips for using NYC car services:
Driving From Brooklyn/Queens/Points East
If you're driving, take the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway West (BQE/I-278 W) and carefully follow signs to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge/Staten Island (keep right when it forks). At the end of the bridge you will hit toll booths ($15 or $10.66 with EZpass). Keep to your right and take the first exit after the bridge (Exit 14 Hylan Boulevard). Take a right turn onto Hylan Blvd, and follow it for a mile, to where it ends at the waterfront. The Alice Austen House will be on your right. You can park there on the street or in the small gravel lot behind the house.
Public Transit From Brooklyn
We'll be honest - there is no super easy public transit route from Brooklyn. Your best bet is going to downtown Manhattan and taking the ferry (see directions below), or if you are intrepid, we suggest you use https://www.hopstop.com to plan a route via one of the Staten Island express buses. Stephen has specific instructions if you want to take the bus from Bay Ridge, so feel free to email him.
Ferry From Manhattan
You catch the ferry at the Whitehall Staten Island Ferry Terminal located at the very south tip of Manhattan. You can get there by subway to South Ferry (1), Whitehall Street (R), or Bowling Green
Station (4/5), or by taxi.
The ferry is free, takes about 25 minutes, and you can enjoy the views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
Island on the way. (And New Jersey!)
Once you dock in Staten Island at the St. George Ferry Terminal, you can take the train or the bus to the
Alice Austen House. The bus takes you closer, but runs every 30 minutes. You pick up the Grant City-
bound S-51 bus at the ferry terminal (see map below) and take it to the corner of Hylan Boulevard and Bay
Street (15 minute ride). Walk one block east to the water and Alice Austen House.
To take the train, follow the signs for the Staten Island Railroad and ride three stops to Clifton Station.
Walk down the platform stairs and a left on Bay Street. Pass under the train overpass (the waterfront
should to your left) and get on Edgewater Street. Take Edgewater Street 0.5 miles to the Alice Austen
House at Hylan Blvd.
Driving From New Jersey/Points West
If you're staying in New Jersey or driving in from points west, use the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) and take exit 13 - I-278/Goethal's Bridge ($14 toll). Continue along the Staten Island Expressway (careful not to split toward 440/West Shore Expressway). You'll get off the expressway at exit 15 - Hylan Boulevard. Take a left onto Hylan Blvd. and follow it for 0.5 miles to the Alice Austen House at its end, the house is on your right. You can park there on the street or in the small gravel lot behind the house.
Swimming Across the Bay
Not encouraged, as there are no nearby dry-cleaning facilities, and the shipping lanes are fairly busy, even on Saturday mornings. Bonus wedding cake for trying, though.
Getting Back
We plan to wrap up at the Alice Austen House by 3 or 3:30pm, so if you plan to come to the after-party, you will have a few hours to spend how you wish (siesta, ferry ride, walk on the waterfront, tour of the city, dinner). If you took a car service to the site, you can probably hitch a ride with another guest back, or use Uber or Lyft.
In case you need to call a car to pick you up, try a Staten Island service like Mid-Island Car Service (718-967-2500), Village Car Service (718-761-3100) or Clove Lake Car Service (718-442-0001).
